The 2009 race was hosted by Spa Striders on a traffic free course in Harbury.
This was the 3rd year that Striders had taken part in this event and it was also our first opportunity to host the event. In the first year we took part we came 3rd in the Ladies Race, 3rd in the Mens Race and 3rd overall, in the second year we came 2nd in the Ladies race, 2nd in the mens race and 2nd overall - surely the momentum was with us and we could hope for better things this year? The 6 mile course was a beautifully scenic route starting and finishing at The Old New Inn at Harbury, taking in Chesterton Windmill, Village and Church along the way. The race started at 7:30pm with 127 runners setting off in ideal conditions. The enthusiasm generated by a fast downhill start was soon tempered by steady climbs in the second half of the race. Luckily the rain held off until the last runner had finished!
And they're off
Kenilworth Runners men were on excellent form to take the Team prize with 6 runners in the top 10 places with a points tally of 846. Phillip Gould of Kenilworth was first home in 33:46. Gareth Waite, who was only putting in a guest appearance with us over the summer holidays was first to finish for the Striders in 37:54 closely followed by Trevor Wilkinson (38:03) and Richard Brangwin (38:40). This was enough for the Striders men to clinch second place with 1424 points, only just ahead of Stratford AC with 1451 points. Although a lot of our top runners were not available for this race it was an impressive team performance.
The start of 5 miles
The Ladies race was a different matter, Kate Wright of Stratford AC was first home on 38:38 but with 7 Striders Ladies in the top 10 the result of the team event was a foregone conclusion, Striders 352 points, Kenilworth 744 points and Stratford 762 points. Carolyn Wilkinson was second overall and led the Striders home in 39:23, but was ably supported by Dawn Clark 41:35, Rowena Neunhoffer 41:37 and Vicki Smith 41:52.
The overall results, the combination of the two races, saw Kenilworth come out on top with 1590 points, Striders second with 1776 points and Stratford third with 2213 points. Full Results in the downloads section.
This was the first time that we had won anything in the Interclub Race - which was quite timely as by the way of a thank you for letting the Striders join in with the longstanding Kenilworth v Stratford Race, we had decided to purchase two Shields to be presented to the winning teams each year. The post race activity was just as frantic with hungry runners tucking into endless plates of chips and sandwiches.
I'll be back in time for the chips
Although Kenilworth Runners and Stratford AC could be considered to be 'rivals' we do appreciate all the races that they put on throughout the year and we do see many of them around the country in various races. Anyway it's always good to meet up with them in friendly competition and probably more importantly in the bar afterwards!
